Cossies - A level playing field
We are applying our cossies rule rule to events in the series for 2009/10. To be eligible for points from these swims, swimmers must wear conventional "budgy smuggler" or "sluggo" cossies (for blokes, that means cossies just covering essential components of the body) and conventional cossies for laydees, ie no arms or legs. This also means no neoprene or other hi-tech material, and only one pair of cossies at a time, please. FINA rules meaning nothing to us. We don't want a repeat of the farce that is the FINA handling of the cossie issue.
Subject to this cossie rule, all swimmers who take part in any of the swims included in the series automatically earn points in the series.
The Series - How it works
The series aims to encourage participation in a greater number of swims, particularly later in the season, and in new swims and country swims. See the list of swims below ...
Swims are (click swim name for handicap results) -
As with last season, the series will reward participation and performance. We'll use the oceanswims.com handicap system to adjust times for age and sex. We produce a handicap finishing order, then calculate points on where you finished relative to the winner. It doesn't just count down according to your handicap position: it's based on how fast you swam relative to the winner.
Points will be awarded for each swim. You will need to take part in nine swims to qualify for the series, of which two swims must be in country areas (ie, outside Sydney).
View Swim Gear is supporting the series with event prizes.
The first series winner was Ben "Stand and Deliver!" Hall, an unassuming truckie from Liberty Grove. Last season's winner was Glistening Dave Helsham, a grizzled, if also unassuming graphic designer, photograrpher and artist from Mona Vale. These two winners show that, under our handicap system, anyone can win it.
